Narrow-Bandwidth sensors

Fibre optic sensors measures the in-situ modulation of the optical properties of light travelling in the fibre, e.g. wavelength, intensity, frequency etc., which is caused by an external signal. Fibre optic sensing users narrow-bandwidth lasers as the light source, and employs FMCW technique for the transmission of optical signal and detection of the optical response. Inteferometry is used in conjuection with the narrow-bandwidth sensors to achieve the extraction of measurement with extremely high sensitivity and good SNR far beyond the ability of conventional sensors.

Gas sensing

Different gas molecules have different absorption peaks in the infrared spectrum. Using this characteristic (e.g., the absorption peak of methane is near 1.6 μm, and that of carbon dioxide is at about 2 μm), the gas can be qualitatively or quantitatively detected and analysed. Since the molecular vibrational energy level is in the near-infrared to mid-infrared band, MHz level spectral linewidth is required.

Optical components measurement

Various substances have different reflectance, transmittance and absorptance of light. The composition and properties of substance can be learned by spectral measurements of above properties. Reflection and transmission spectroscopy are the basic means of spectral measurement. To achieve these two spectral measurements, spectrometers, light sources, optical fibres, measurement brackets, standard reference samples and measurement software are usually required.

Laser ranging is a technique which uses a laser beam to determine the distance to a target object. The most common form of laser ranging operates on the time of flight principle by sending a laser pulse in a narrow beam towards the object and measuring the time taken by the pulse to be reflected off the target and returned to the sender.
