Transparent material welding

Laser technology is well developed in the field of plastic processing. The most widely used technology in laser plastic welding, also known as laser transmission welding, requires the two welded parts to transmit and absorb light respectively. However, when both parts are transparent, it is difficult for such traditional welding methods to work because of the lack of an absorption layer. This is fundamentally caused by the low absorption rate of visible light in transparent materials. Nevertheless, utilising the intrinsic absorption of polymers at 2 microns, the transparent materials can be welded by 2 micron laser without an absorption layer. This method not only avoids using additives to make absorption layers, but also has an excellent processing quality.
